The Hans Christian Andersen version IS the original version and has the little mermaid about to turn into sea foam but then get rescued by the air spirits to go spend 300 years doing good deeds for mortals in exchange for an eternal soul. That IS the original version that the commenter above linked to, and the only version before the Disney one, which is totally different in almost every way other than that there are mermaids.
